Experimental Comparison of the MIG and Friction Stir Welding Processes for AA 6005 Aluminium Alloy

In this study, the mechanical properties of welded joints of AA 6005 aluminum alloy obtained with friction stir welding (FSW) and conventional metal inert gas welding (MIG) are studied. FSW welds were carried out on a semi-automatic milling machine. The performance of FSW and MIG welded joints were identified using tensile and bending impact tests, as far as the environmental aspects are also included in the discussion. The joints obtained with FSW and MIG processes were also investigated in their microstructure. Abstract Chromic acid anodizing is important for the corrosion protection of aerospace aluminium alloys. Previous study has demonstrated that SO 4 2 − impurity in the chromic acid affects the film growth on aluminium at a voltage of 100 V. The present work further investigates aluminium and extends the study to industrial anodizing conditions (Bengough-Stuart (B-S) process) and to the AA 2024-T3 alloy. It is shown that SO 4 2 − concentrations between ~ 38–300 ppm reduce the film growth rate for aluminium anodized at 100 V in comparison with an electrolyte than contains ≤ 1.5 ppm SO 4 2 − , whereas ~ 1500–3000 ppm SO 4 2 have an opposite effect and lead to an unstable pore diameter. Laser surface treatments for adhesion improvements of aluminium alloys structural joints

Abstract Laser technology is proposed as a friendly alternative treatment to chemicals involved in conventional prebonding adherend treatments. Aluminium alloy 2024 substrates were laser treated with different beam diameters and energy densities, and bonded using a structural epoxy adhesive. The influence of irradiation conditions on adherends morphology and adhesive joints’ fracture energy was investigated. On the basis of different morphologies observed, an explanation of the effect of the surface treatment upon joint mechanical behaviour is attempted.

Density functional theory based screening of ternary alkali-transition metal borohydrides: a computational material design project.

We present a computational screening study of ternary metal borohydrides for reversible hydrogen storage based on density functional theory. We investigate the stability and decomposition of alloys containing 1 alkali metal atom, Li, Na, or K M1; and 1 alkali, alkaline earth or 3d / 4d transition metal atom M2 plus two to five BH4 groups, i.e., M1M2BH42‐5, using a number of model structures with trigonal, tetrahedral, octahedral, and free coordination of the metal borohydride complexes. Of the over 700 investigated structures, about 20 were predicted to form potentially stable alloys with promising decomposition energies. Abstract The results of experimental activity on friction stir welding (FSW) of aluminum alloys are reported. Butt joints of two different materials, namely AA2024-T4 and AA7075-T6, were investigated from a metallurgical point of view. Grain dimensions and insoluble particle densities were investigated both in the parent materials and in the joints. Furthermore, the effect of post-welding heat treatments on the joint strength was studied.

The influence of surface treatments on the mechanical strength of adhesive joints was investigated. The attention was focused on AA2024 alloy because it is extensively used in both the automotive and aerospace industries. Adhesive joints fabricated with pure aluminium were also investigated in order to evidence possible differences in the surface features after identical treatments. Sheet Bending Modelling for AA 5083 Aluminium Alloy

An extensive investigation of the V- and U-die bending processes of AA 5083 aluminium alloy has been performed by means of the finite element method and the experimental tests. The predicted results, in terms of elastic springback and loads, were compared with the experimental ones in similar conditions. At a given punch stroke, the springback ratio K increases with the sheet thickness, and, at a constant sheet thickness, K increases with the punch stroke.
